Our friends Jules and Ian were recently given two pairs of ducks. Sadly the female of one pair was scooped and devoured by an eagle. This horrible event was quickly offset by the discovery of two errant ducklings making a break from the compound to the open field near the house. Mom was nowhere to be seen and there was no coaxing her from under the house once the ducklings had been captured. No maternal instinct could pry her out from her nest, she was responsible for another imminent hatching.

The first two ducklings w

ere farmed out to an adoptive chicken across the island once Mama
Moscovy opted for further nest sitting. Her nest is under the house where no human should properly go, so it was impossible to tuck the ducklings where they belonged - under mama. All Jules could do was wait to see what happened next. Two more ducklings popped up, then a third and finally there were four. When the mom finally appeared, Jules ducknapped her and hastily built a safe compound for the flustered fowl.
But that wasn't the end of it. Today, another peep peep was heard several feet away from the house - in the tall grass. Another duckling had made its way into the field and had become trapped in the underbrush. Unbelievably, Jules heard the little gaffer and managed to grab him. All five ducklings are united in hay and sheltered from raptors. Now only Rob the Duck Whisperer has access....
