Snow Geese at the Spit

Every so often we take a walk out to the end of Iona Spit at the mouth of the mighty Fraser River. It's a great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse one's self in the sights, smells, and sounds of the ocean.

Where the spit joins "Sea Island", which is where the Vancouver Airport lives, there are extensive mudflats. Here, you can watch herons, eagles, sand pipers, and all manner of geese and gulls feeding, or just plain hanging out. Yesterday was a real treat for us because there were hundreds of snow geese right beside the access road.

We stopped for a few pictures, then walked the couple of km out to the end of the sand bar. On one side of the spit is the Georgia Straight with Vancouver Island visible on a more clear day. On the other side you'll see tugs and barges chugging their way up and down the Fraser River.

We were able to get out and back before any serious rain hit. I was wiped out at the end of it. The season of excess, not being able to ride, and generally being a lazy slob has sapped all my endurance. No matter. We always come back smiling from this walk. To top it all off, we stopped for Indian fast food take out on the way home and brought back samosas, butter chicken, lamb curry, birfi, gulab jumon, and that Indian equivalent of bits and bites. Clap your hands, say YUM!

Doug, thank you for sharing the wonderful snow geese picture and topping it off with some delightful writing. This has brought back some distant but beautiful memories when I used to walk up and down the Richmond Dyke in leisure evenings and weekends. Now, if I can just work on creating those best time once again...
