At 4:30pm he wove into the driveway on his bike, thank goodness. He was giddy, slurring and bursting out laughing in spurts as he recounted the antics of the afternoon of sushi making. Tor, Greg, Aaron, Dan, Tim, another Greg and Alan were the sushi meisters and Doug was pressed into service as general kitchen help. It seems the afternoon involved some 80 proof apple jack. There were many stories that will remain untold on this blog...
Doug: OK, maybe I'll tell ONE. It became apparent that the Seabreeze Lodge was hosting a 4 course meal at their dining room and were in direct competition with us. At around 4, we were ahead of schedule so we piled into a couple of vehicles and drove to the Seabreeze and demanded drinks. To their credit Jeff made us all daiquiris and sent us on our way. As we were leaving their head chef showed up. While he stood joking around with a few of us Dan crept up behind him and executed the best "pantsing" I've ever seen, getting the boxers and the pants in one fell swoop. We left, fully satisfied, having raided their bar
Sushi Night is a fund raiser for the local school and they really do it up right. All the women dress up in kimono and bits of Japanese accoutrement. Guests pay $25 for an all-you-can-enjoy buffet. There was mostly maki, but also some nigiri sushi. All of this is orchestrated by Greg, who Doug used to work with, and who now has a full farm of animals and a part time job on the ferry as well as a young family to take care of. Somehow he manages to squeeze this in every year.
As the night wore on the kitchen got even more raucous, the 'geishas' lost their manners and it became a general free-for-all. Green tea was being spiked with moonshine and the chefs were circulating in the crowd with smoked tuna on their knives for sampling. Everyone was good natured, we met even more great people and it was all just another unique and memorable event on this island.
