Canada Day

Sure, from the photo it might look like Portuguese day, but it's actually Canada day! This morning we hopped on the bikes and headed down to Commercial Drive for a coffee. As we were sitting outside the cafe with our lattes, England lost to Portugal in the semi final of the World Cup.

Commercial drive went nuts. There was gridlock, constant blaring of car horns, people cheering, and general mayhem ruled. The police moved in fast - but not to qwell the crowd. They actually redirected traffic and left the people in the street to celebrate the win! We coasted our bikes a few blocks down to the Portuguese Club of Vancouver, where the center of the action would be, and sure enough, it was pretty crazy. We hung out for a bit and took some photos, then headed back towards home.

We were invited out to Rachelle's uncle Paul's place in Chilliwack for a Canada Day party in the afternoon. Our car was at the car fixer on the North Shore, so once we got home I changed into some cycling clothes, switched to the Marinoni, and blasted over to get the car. That all worked out quite well and we were headed out to Chilliwack by mid afternoon.


As always, a BBQ at Paul and Gail's place is a great time. There were lots of Rachelle's family there including her cousin Paula and her 3 kids who we never get to see, since they live in Alberta.

The food was most excellent. Paul and Gail made up over 100 meatballs, from the organic beef that they raise on their property, and also BBQ'd up several dozen salmon hunks. There were many salads, lots of fruit, and a large "Happy Birthday Canada" cake. Mmmmm!


This is the same Paul that had the quad bypass that I wrote about in an earlier blog entry.
Paul has also been a great source of both information and building supplies for our place on Hornby. All the windows in the cabin were donated by Paul.
