Wow. What a fierce day on the south coast of BC. Wind gusts over 100 km/h and periods of rain. There was a lull in the rain around noon, so we grabbed the rain gear and headed out to Iona Spit.
Iona Spit is a provincial park near the Vancouver airport. The Fraser River, over the centuries, has deposited silt along its outflow forming a sand spit that extends 4 or 5 kilometers out into the Georgia Straight. Its home to lots of gulls, sandpipers, and other shore birds. There are several red-listed bog plants living in the middle of the spit.

The rain held off for the hour or two that it took us to get to the end of the spit. The energy in the wind and waves was fantastic. An endless line of airplanes flew in, seemingly hovering above us, heading into the strong wind. Gulls spread their wings and floated almost motionless in the face of the storm.

Shortly after we began the return trip the rains came, making us pretty happy we took the extra time to pack the rain gear. It was a long slog back to the car with the tempest in our faces, but it was all worth it knowing a warm cup of tea and dry clothes waited for us at home.
