You may recall me blogging a few weeks ago about the house that we're building at work. It has this complex roof with 5 separate planes. Because it's such a conceptual thing with many different angles, the architect has been unable to provide us with hard numbers for some key heights. We're left to make it work ourselves.
We know a few heights and are trying to make everything fit with the other points that are fixed. The majority of the roof points are neither known, nor fixed. In order to resolve those mystery points we've taken to running string lines along all of the beam trajectories. There are about a dozen beams that support this section of the roof and none of them are parallel to each other. At times we have had so many strings strung across the top of the house, it was looking like a giant spider was aiming to catch a parachuter.
We've spent 3 days, so far, to sort it all out and will probably devote the better part of tomorrow on the problem as well. The saddest part of it all is that when we're done you will never see this intricate network of beams. They'll all be hidden above soffits and ceiling.

Well, Doug, at least when the house is finished it won't have any strings attached.
