Studio Almost Ready for Roofing

It's been non-stop work on the studio in an attempt to have something that Rachelle can not only work in next winter, but to also display some work during the busy season. Since the last blog entry about the studio, I've put up all the beach logs, the beams, rafters on the overhang, and the subfascia. The photo to the left is Al and I tacking on the last hunk.

This weekend saw Rachelle and I working somewhere around 10 hours a day to get the roof strapping finished. Normally roof strapping goes pretty quickly but we're combining strapping and soffits on any exposed bit of roof by strapping the overhangs solid. Strapping on the inside portion of the house is every 3rd stick. It's a pretty ingenious way of doing things and I blatantly stole the idea from a house designer here on the island. We've used this technique on the last few houses that we've built at work.

This method used a LOT of lumber, especially with the overhangs on this studio, but with the price of lumber at a long term low, it's actually pretty cheap to do it this way. I ordered 120 16' sticks and came up 12 short. I'll get those when I order the roofing and the felt.

It's becoming quite a grand building and I think it will look really great with some nice cedar window trim, shingles on the walls, and a nice beefy double fascia. ... not to mention the ceramic work that will grace the windows!

It looks fantastic. I am sure Rachelle will thoroughly enjoy working in this state of the art studio. Keep up the fantastic work.

That is one beautiful building. I can feel the art coming out of it already.

Congratulations!
