For many years now Doug has given me a bird feeder for Christmas. He made a flicker nesting box one year. Another year he made a feeding platform for seed foraging birds, like junkos and chickadees, and the following year a feeder for tree birds, like jays and woodpeckers. One year he gave me a beautiful glass hummingbird feeder, but that feeder somehow got knocked off its platform this winter and smashed to bits. The only piece I was able to salvage was the red 'flower' that I glued back together.
That red flower is what attracts the humming birds to the sugar water, and while it's not pretty sitting in its plain glass jar... the hummingbird gets to set on the jar's edge. Usually they have to hover over the flower while they drink, wearing them down too much to hang around. So the jar is actually a design enhancement because Doug was able to take pictures of this little guy lounging sugar poolside this Easter weekend.
