After taking a year off due to a school board scheduling conflict, the Fire Department Cadet Camp has been resurrected. Last year some funky scheduling misaligned the mainland spring break with that of Hornby Island and enrollment was just too low to run the camp. Not this year. A whack of fire fighters are volunteering pretty much two full days to the camp, which kids get to attend for free. It's a great deal.

The little cadets pull victims from car crashes, after they pull the roof off the car, of course. They learn how to make a 911 call - and then make a real 911 call through the local dispatch (who are forewarned). Fires on stoves get put out with pot lids, and great big (medium sized) fires are put out with fire extinguishers. They also spray foam and water out of real fire hoses. The adults keep petitioning for their own cadet camp. So far we've had no luck. But I did manage to sneak in to learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Lots of fun.

Doug has been working on organizing the camp for over a month. I do the cooking with help from a bunch 'o cookie helpers. It's a lot of fun and I bet it sticks in the imaginations of every kid who attends. Great memories.
