Fall Fair and Hornby Fairy Godperson

Another day in paradise. Today was Hornby Island's Fall Fair complete with baby animals, produce competitions, best vegetable prizes, music, vendors and a parade! Doug drove one of the fire trucks in the procession and took our visiting neighbours and their kids along for the ride. What a thrill for those kids.

For the first time I participated in the fair with a booth. I had a waterfront site at the edge of the fair, which, under a bright sunny sky, was absolutely heavenly. Doug came to spell me off between fire truck show and tell shifts. Many of our fellow islanders dropped by to say hello and it was the quintessential Hornby day. The fall fair is a fantastic wrap up to the busy summer and is generally a place where the locals gather to catch up and get ready for the quieter months.

And then there is the letter we got yesterday. In a stack of bills and various notices was this letter from an anonymous islander. It was mailed on Hornby, with the word "Local" replacing the postal code, this way our mail doesn't go to Moncton for sorting before it goes across island. Inside the envelope was a note that was written in response to a letter Doug and I published in our island newsletter about having our car stolen. Wrapped inside the note were 10-$50 bills. From a stranger. I don't even know how to begin processing this one.

Doug and I spent the summer being suspicious of every stranger who walked past, now we'll spend the winter wondering which of our fellow islanders was the anonymous angel. What a place. It makes our heads spin - in all directions!!

What a great place to live in this day and age. I guess good people are still around. I'm so glad for both of you

I thought that someone living on an island full of trees would be on to the expression " can't see the forest for the trees"!
Obviously the guy who stole the car was the guy who sent you the $500. Too bad he only "rented" the car, which is the word you use when you crack it up 24 hours after you stole it. In spite of his injuries, he's still thinking it was the cheapest joyride he ever took. Look at it this way: Maybe you'll be sitting at the same campfire as him, years down the road, when he starts bragging to his "friends" about the car he stole, and the fun he and his friends had with it that night. And you'll be able to tell the story about when the fire alarm came in on his place, and you walked over to watch it burn to the ground. Revenge can be sweet, you know. Then you can ask him if the 500 dollars covered the house!
Enjoy your day. Unca Warren

The 'perps' don't live on Hornby. Also, I met two of them and one of their mothers. Believe me - they are fully ruled out. This gift came from someone with conscience and compassion. Different breed altogether....

I'm just glad I spelled "Hornby" correctly.
